A phobia for most. But with unbelievable rents & low pay it can't be avoided.
When (if) homeless it cost 2x as much to survive then it does when housed. Food with no real storage in the shelters averages to $6.00 a meal clothes ( lil to no laundry ) $10.00 for a pair of pants or shirt every 1 - 2 mnt's ( if not full wardrobe replacement). Carfare for job hunting comes out of your pocket as well (yes, even on a $36.00 a month P.A. budget).
Attitudes are awful in these places, sexual harasment , theft , from the employee's and the housed they both smell awful as well. Privacy is unheard of ( more info. in later post about that ).

The best advice is to have a savings acct. For such day's . Hope they truly never befall you.
